5 Mistakes Beginner Artists Make in the Recording Studio
Recording in a professional studio is exciting but it can also be overwhelming if you're not prepared. After years of working with artists at all levels, we've put together the most common mistakes beginners make, so you don't have to learn them the hard way.
1. Showing Up Unprepared
Studio time costs money , every minute counts. Arriving without your lyrics memorised, without a clear arrangement, or without reference tracks means you're paying to figure out things you should have sorted at home. Before your session: know your lyrics by heart, have a demo recording ready, and bring 2–3 reference tracks that capture the sound you're going for.
2. Skipping the Vocal Warm-Up
Cold vocals lead to cracks, strain, and takes that need to be redone. A 15–20 minute warm-up before the session makes a huge difference. Simple exercises, some steam, a cup of warm water , your voice will thank you.
3. Not Trusting Your Producer's Take Selection
In the heat of the moment, artists often fall in love with the take they just sang. But your Producer is listening differently , hearing your voice in the context of the full arrangement, the mix, and the dynamic arc of the song. When your producer picks a take you wouldn't have chosen yourself, trust the process. That expert ear is exactly what you're paying for.
4. Drinking Sugary Drinks Before Recording
Coffee, juice, energy drinks, sodas , all of these coat your vocal cords and create excess mucus, forcing you to clear your throat constantly between takes. Stick to room-temperature water. If you need energy before a session, have a light meal instead.
5. Thinking Post-Production Will Fix Everything
"We'll fix it in the mix" is the most expensive myth in music production. Mixing and mastering enhance a great recording , they don't rescue a bad one. The quality of your vocal performance and raw recording account for 80% of the final result. Give your mix engineer something to work with.
