Oleksandr "Sasha" Chemerov (born 4 August 1981 in Chernihiv, Ukraine) is a Ukrainian rock musician, songwriter, DJ, record producer and poet — one of the most prolific and quietly influential figures in Ukrainian music over the past two decades. He is the frontman of the Ukrainian rock band Dymna Sumish and founder of the American-Ukrainian band The Gitas.
Though his name may not always appear in the spotlight, Chemerov's fingerprints are all over Ukrainian pop culture: he was the primary songwriter (both music and lyrics) for Quest Pistols Show before 2016, crafting the hooks and melodies that made the group one of the most-streamed acts in the post-Soviet space. He also wrote songs for actor and singer Arthur Pirozhkov, English-language lyrics for Ivan Dorn's international album, and material for singer Valeria Kozlova. Music videos for songs written by Chemerov accumulated hundreds of millions of views on YouTube as of 2020.
Born in Chernihiv, Sasha moved through Ukraine's indie and rock scene as both a performer and a behind-the-scenes creative force. His band Dymna Sumish became a cult name in Ukrainian alternative rock, blending grunge, post-punk and alternative sounds with sharp, poetic Ukrainian-language lyrics. In parallel, The Gitas brought his music to American audiences.
Chemerov has performed at Ukraine's biggest music festivals including Atlas Weekend — sharing the stage with international acts like Liam Gallagher and Tom Walker — as well as Bandershtat, Zaxidfest and Rakhiv Music Fest. He has continued releasing music through the war years: his 2022 video for "Zamist' Mene" was shot on a thermal imager borrowed from the Azov Regiment — a raw, powerful document of wartime Ukraine. His 2025 solo album "Dymna Sumish", described by the artist himself as a "bipolar striptease", marked a bold creative return.
